Many dental experts claim that mouthwashes and whitening toothpastes are good for us; however, some contain ingredients that can be more harmful than advantageous leaving us questioning whether dental products are good for our teeth.
Ingredients included in oral-care products, that we are advised to use with caution include:
This is one of the most popular ingredients of toothpaste, as Triclosan works for up to 12 hours in order to prevent the formation of bacterial plaque. This ingredient has recently come under scrutiny since many studies have indicated that it acts as an endocrine disruptor, and causes hormonal imbalances including thyroid issues and fertility problems. It is also connected to antibiotic resistance.
It has recently been revealed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that Johnson & Johnson is planning to remove Triclosan from its soap by 2015.
Alcohol is another risky ingredient, which is why many experts are promoting alcohol free mouthwashes, as they contain zinc which helps to fight bad breath. One of the most popular brands of mouthwash contains as much as 20% concentration of alcohol. Just like drinking too much alcohol, using mouthwash that contains alcoholdries your mouth and makes your breath worse. Therefore it makes your teeth more susceptible to cavities because alcohol reduces the natural protection of saliva.
Carbamide peroxide is commonly found in gels, rinses and whitening toothpastes and is often confused with Hydrogen peroxide, which is used for bleaching.
Many people associate the word "whitening" with "bleaching," and they consider that such whitening dental products will work to remove deep stains that liveinside the tooth and bring back the white sparkle to their smile.
However, when you read the label of whitening toothpaste, you will notice that it claims to eradicate only the surface stains. This means that this product is only working to remove the top layer of stains on the outer enamel, and it is not effective enough to whiten the inside of the tooth.
If you really want to get rid of the stains on the teeth, you will need to visit your dentist.
